In 2004, Coachella saw its fifth edition taking place. It was then headlined by British icons Radiohead and The Cure. It was the first time the festival sold out with a record 110,000 people attending more than 80 concerts on both days of the festival.
2004 was also the first year that people came from 50 different states. The success was such that Rolling Stone Magazine named Coachella as the best festival in the country. It was this year that one of the festival's founders, Tollett from Godevoice, sold half of the stake to AEG, being Coachella from now on managed by both. Radiohead's hiring has raised the bar not only for the public but also for the artists themselves.
This was the only concert of the British band in the United States this year. Radiohead gave the audience an incredible performance that included songs from the new album Hail To The Thief as well as hits like "Karma Police", "Paranoid Android" and "Creep". But also The Cure gave a great show with three debut live songs: "Lost", "Before Three" and "The Promise". Coachella 2004 also marked the return of the Pixies after more than a decade apart.
The poster also featured names such as Wilco, Krafwerk, Air, The Flaming Lips,Belle & Sebastian, Basement Jaxx, Paul Van Dyk, Bright Eyes, The(International) Noise Conspiracy, Sparta and many others. Josh Homme took his Desert Sessions onstage and other bands, who became headliners years later, also went through the Emporio Polo Club this year.
LCD Soundsystem would not release their first album until the following year, but by 2004 they had "Losing My Edge", "Give It Up" or "Yeah" as enough singles to convince Coachella. The Black Keys were going to release Rubber Factory in September but they were still far from the songs we all know today. The Killers reached Coachella a month before releasing Hot Fuss. It was the first time they played “Mr. Brightside ”,“ Somebody Told Me ”and“ Smile Like You Mean It ”. Also Muse were there but they were not yet one of the most important bands in the World.
In addition there was The Rapture, Death Cab For Cutie, Le Tigre, Mogwai, 2ManyDJs, The Sounds, Ash, The Thrills, !!!, Broken Social Scene, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Stereolab, Electric Six, Ferry Corsten, Seb Fontaine, Mark Farina, Juana Molina, Thursday, The Crystal Method, Danger Mouse and many others. An epic lineup.
