Review: Super Bock Super Rock 2019
The 25th edition of the Super Bock Super Rock Festival took place this last weekend. This is one of the oldest and most famous festivals in Portugal. And also one that changes the most. The event went through several venues since its debut and from 2015 to 2018 it was held at Parque das Nações in Lisbon. This year SBSR returned to Meco, where it had been held before, which presents a more country side setting and is located near excellent beaches.
Across four days (the first one as a Warm-Up for campers) the festival featured a wide range of well known international acts blended with local favourites. Topping the bill were Lana Del Rey, Phoenix and Migos, the three headliners. But also Janelle Mónae, The 1975, Metronomy, Masego, Disclosure, Christine & The Queens, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Kaytranada, Shame, Capitão Fausto, Jungle, Branko, Superorganism, Gorgon City, Calexico with Iron & Wine and many others offered excellent gigs.
Super Bock Super Rock was very well organized. The venue is quite spacious and during the days that the organization said it was sold-out, you could circulate very easily. There are 4 stages around the venue and between 5:00 pm and 3:00 am there is always music somewhere. It is not difficult to get a beer because there are several points of sale and as far as food is concerned, there is also a lot of variety. We talked to several campers and the conditions are pretty good. "Much better than five years ago," they said. The organization made an effort to improve the campsite conditions and also of the venue itself and it showed well.
Super Bock Super Rock, which in recent years was held at the urban Parque das Nações (built in 1998 to host EXPO'98 and which featured the Main Stage inside a pavilion), returned from where it should never have left. The festival spirit returned.
The Portuguese festival returns next year from July 16 to 18, at the same place where it was held this year. Half an hour from Lisbon, Meco offers great beaches, lots to do and to rest too.
